East Midlands Sustainable Schools Showcase 4th June 2009
An event organised in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council and the Centre for British Teachers, the EPIC Centre’s exhibition halls were transformed by over 100 exhibitors into the Government’s eight Sustainable Schools Framework doorways for a free event aimed at education sector staff in the East Midlands. With wonderful performances on the stage by 70 local school children, drumming workshops in Global Dimension and three amazing indoor gardens in Buildings and Grounds the event was both atmospheric and colourful.
With an additional 24 workshops in the upstairs suites imparting knowledge and signposting support, the day was designed to equip educators across the East Midlands with the knowledge, skills and contacts to successfully make their school more sustainable.
Feedback from exhibitors and attendees was excellent. The event received visitors from well beyond the East Midlands boundary highlighting the demand and interest in developing sustainability within schools.
With 2009 being such a success the Sustainable Schools Showcase 2010 has been doubled in size and invites have gone to all school councils and eco groups to ensure that young people are also equiped with the knowledge to infom the sustainable development their school.

Lincolnshire Sustainable Energy Development Seminar for Schools – 14 November 2008
The recent marked increase in energy prices has led to a demand for expert advice on mitigating the impact this would have on the operation of our schools larger buildings. Therefore a one day conference and exhibition was held in conjunction with the Centre for British Teachers Course on Sustainable Development in Schools to bring together schools and the business sector to exchange information and requirements on the potential for incorporating sustainable technologies into new and refurbished school buildings.
Throughout the day various talks by experts provided advice on evaluating buildings in terms of their energy rating, on how to plan energy and water audits and an understanding of the costs and benefits of available technologies and potential sources of local and national funding. In addition eighteen exhibitors were on hand throughout the day for attendees to gain further information and one-to-one advice.
The day was a great success with 31 staff from 26 schools along with an additional 43 representatives from local government and businesses being able to meet and exchange ideas.
Sixth Form Disaster Planning Event 18th September 2008
The Lincoln Group Training Association gave local Sixth Form students the ultimate challenge, to plan emergency relief after a climate change linked natural disaster. The day’s activities were based on the real events of Hurricane Mitch and the resulting catastrophic effects sustained in Central America.
Pupils were given briefing papers containing a detailed situation report to provide data to aid planning the delivery of relief and cater for the needs of the surviving inhabitants.
After the classroom based planning exercises the students ventured outside into the sun (though not quite Central American temperatures) to test their planning skills via practical activities. The building of emergency shelters in teams with some bamboo canes and plastic sheet produced a range of results which were all tested with a willing team member inside and a gleeful adult helper pouring a bucket of water over it. Whilst some strategically positioned chairs formed a mountain range which had to be negotiating to construct a water supply.
A simple idea produced a fantastically informative day through a lighthearted method which was enjoyed by all.
