Update on the NK Straw HouseAugust 24th 2009 Project

October 2009

The Waddington Straw Houses are making good progressas the pictures show. The main fabric of these new council houses, in Waddington, Lincolnshire, is almost finished. This picture was taken on the 7th of August and shows straw walling almost up to the first floor. At this stage the blue tarpaulins had to be lowered every night to protect the straw.

The next stage in the build is a three stage lime rendering process which will be completed on the outside of the walls by the end of October. The lime coating provides a protective layer and allows the walls to be fully exposed to the elements. October 7th 2009The weather has been very favourable for this process. In hot weather the lime coatings have to be lightly damped to help them to sure evenly whilst curing becomes very slow if the average sir temperature falls below 80C.

This picture shows the completed walls of the building with the roof securely in position. The new triple glazed windows will be installed shortly making the whole building weather tight. Work is also well underway on the installation of the electrics and plumbing.
